Seasoned bicycling enthusiasts know that spandex biking garments serve two purposes. Bicycling garments keep riders’ bodies dry, while making them look good.
Of course their primary function is keeping the bike rider comfortable, dry with minimal chafing on long rides. That’s why most team cycling jerseys are made from spandex, which wicks moisture away from the body so that riders don’t get chilled while on long rides.
Anyone who says they’re wearing a $90 Gioradana cycling jersey for purely functional reasons is probably pulling your leg a bit. Bicycling jerseys and bib shorts let riders feel like Lance Armstrong barreling down the French Alps on one of his many Tour de France victories. It’s the same feeling as a men’s softball league player gets when he throws on his jersey and cleats.
Not surprisingly, looking good and staying dry comes at a price. Name brand cycling gear like Castelli jerseys and Pearl Izumi shoes are not cheap. With prices starting at around $55 for a spandex jersey, these are not necessarily what the casual bike rider is looking for.
Of course there are off brand spandex cycling garments that may not hold up as well as the name brand items, but will serve the same function nonetheless. It’s up to the rider to decide how good they really need to look while riding.
